Storm Chasing Equipment

I've had a lot of people ask me what kind of equipment I use when chasing. It's really not much more than my laptop and some extras, but I'll outline them here.

Vehicle

A Black 2002 Ford Ranger XLT Supercab. Bought it used in 2004 for 9200, paid off in 2007. Running great with over 150,000 miles on it as of December 2008. More Information

Ham Radio Gear

The main HAM radio gear in my truck is the Kenwood TM-D710A Dual Band (2m/440) mobiile radio. I use it for both APRS and voice communication either to a local repeater or simplex if I am not nearby any major repeaters. I have the Byonics GPS2 hooked up to my Kenwood to provide the GPS data for APRS. I have a Diamond SG7500A Dual Band antenna with a magmount on the roof of the truck with provides a 3.5db gain on 2 meters and 6db gain on 440.

I also carry my Kenwood TH-F6A handheld Tri-Band Amateur Radio with me everytime I am chasing in the event that ground communications are needed after a tornadic or severe thunderstorm event.

CB Radio

I use a COBRA 19 DX IV 40-Channel CB Radio with a K40 Base Loaded CB Antenna and a magmount. The CB doesn't have as much range as my old Cobra 29 LTD, but is much smaller and fits much better inside the limited space in the cab of my truck.

Video Cameras

I don't have anything elaborate - Just a Sony Handycam DCR-HC28. It is a Mini-DV Camera with a firewire port which I use to hook to my Laptop. I also have a Dazzle DVC 100 which I can use to hook it up to USB. I also have a Sony Handycam DCR-HC52. The dash cam is mounted with a filmtools windshield mount.

Still Camera

I am currently using a Canon S2-IS 5 megapixel camera for all of my still shots. I have 2 SD cards, each 1 GB in size for it. I am looking into getting a Canon Digital SLR.

Laptop

I have a Gateway MX6433 Laptop with 256 mb extra ram over factory specs (768mb ram total). Some of the software applications I run on this include GRLevel3 and GRLevel2AnalystEdition (NEXRAD Data), GPSGate (GPS Data splitter), Microsoft Streets & Trips 2008 (Navigation), Pidgin (Instant Messaging), Thunderbird (E-mail), Spotter Network (Position Updates), Windows Media Encoder (Live Streaming Video), Mozilla Firefox (Web Browsing) and Pinnacle Studio 10 (Video Editing). I am running these all on Windows XP Professional.

Music

On Board XM Satellite Radio via my XM SkyFi 3 receiver.

Lightbar

Quartz Halogen Minilight Bar hooked up with a toggle switch for simple on/off operation.
